Autumn is a particularly good time to explore Paris as a family. The busiest summer weeks are over, the parks change colour and late October offers a good mix of outdoor walks and indoor cultural activities for days when the weather is less predictable.
For families visiting during holidays, or simply planning an October or early-November break in Paris, Montparnasse makes a convenient base. The neighbourhood combines museums, parks, local food streets and some of southern Paris’s most unusual attractions, many of them within walking distance of Hôtel Helzear Montparnasse by Esteem.
1. Go underground at the Paris Catacombs
One of the most unusual experiences in Paris is just a short walk from the hotel.
The Paris Catacombs, beneath Denfert-Rochereau, take visitors around 20 metres underground through former quarry galleries and an ossuary containing the remains of several million Parisians. It is an atmospheric way to discover another side of the city’s history.
Because of the setting, the visit is likely to appeal most to older children and teenagers rather than very young children. Booking ahead is strongly recommended.
2. Discover Parisian history at the Musée de la Libération
Directly opposite the Catacombs at Denfert-Rochereau, the Musée de la Libération de Paris – Musée du Général Leclerc – Musée Jean Moulin is another useful option for families, especially on a rainy autumn day.
Its permanent collections are free to visit, and the museum regularly offers activities designed specifically for families. One of its family experiences takes children into the underground command post used by Colonel Rol-Tanguy during the Liberation of Paris.
Combining the museum with Denfert-Rochereau makes it easy to organise a half-day without travelling across the city.
3. Introduce children to sculpture at the Musée Bourdelle
Near Montparnasse station, the Musée Bourdelle occupies the former home, studios and gardens of sculptor Antoine Bourdelle.
It is particularly well suited to a family visit: children can use a free “search and find” activity, explore interactive resources about sculpture and take part in family workshops, including modelling and drawing activities. Some workshops are available from the age of six. Access to the permanent collections is free.
It is a manageable cultural stop for families who want to introduce children to art without spending an entire day inside a large museum.
4. See Paris in autumn at Parc Montsouris
When the weather is clear, head south through the 14th arrondissement to Parc Montsouris.
Spread across more than 15 hectares, the park offers large lawns, mature trees and plenty of room for children to move around after a museum visit. The 14th arrondissement also has several public playgrounds, including play areas within Parc Montsouris.
In October, it is an easy place to enjoy the changing autumn colours without leaving Paris.
5. Spend an afternoon at the Jardin du Luxembourg
A little further north, the Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the classic family stops on the Left Bank.
Rather than treating it as another attraction to “tick off”, leave some time simply to walk through the gardens, stop for a snack and let children enjoy a slower part of the day.
From Montparnasse, it can easily be combined with lunch in the neighbourhood or a walk back towards the hotel.
6. Explore Rue Daguerre like a local
Not every family activity needs a ticket.
Close to the hotel, Rue Daguerre is one of the neighbourhood’s best streets for food shopping and an easy place to experience everyday Paris. Bakeries, fruit and vegetable shops, cheese shops and other local addresses make it useful for picking up breakfast, an afternoon snack or ingredients for dinner.
For families staying several nights, having this type of neighbourhood within walking distance can make the trip considerably easier than relying on restaurants for every meal.
A simple rainy-day plan in Montparnasse
Parisian autumn weather can change quickly, so it helps to keep a few indoor options nearby.
A family day could begin with a pre-booked visit to the Catacombs, continue with lunch around Rue Daguerre and finish at either the Musée de la Libération or Musée Bourdelle.
On a clearer day, swap one of the museums for Parc Montsouris or the Jardin du Luxembourg.
This is one of the advantages of staying in the 14th arrondissement: families can build days around the neighbourhood rather than spending every outing crossing Paris by metro.
